Quando trabalhei na NPL convivi com um grupo de italianos, meus colegas na empresa.
Um dia, numa pausa da manhã, falávamos da Sicília e dos comportamentos dos sicílianos.
Tinha acabado de ler pouco antes desse dia "Ripley's Game" e, vagueando com o pensamento, nostalgicamente como é habitual numa dessas conversas banais mas reflexivas, depressa cheguei ao cliché da máfia, da família e do poder do crime organizado nessa parte da Itália, a famosa terra da mítica máfia. Lembrei-me então do atroz presente de que se diz deixado pelas máfias italianas às vitimas na véspera da morte destas, representando a marcação e a proximidade da morte.
Fazendo com isso uma piada disse então qualquer coisa como:
"E se vocês quando um cliente italiano respondesse que não queria mais produtos, lhe dissessem: - Olhe que é melhor aceitar ou então amanhã talvez acorde com uma cabeça de cavalo ao seu lado!"
Eles não se riram e demonstraram algum embaraço.
Eu percebi nessa altura que a forma com que eu olhava para aquela "cabeça de cavalo" não era a mesma deles. Ora eles eram italianos e uma "cabeça de cavalo" em Itália é diferente de uma "cabeça de cavalo" em Portugal ou na Irlanda. Ou seja, se tal fosse dito a um português o grau de seriedade não seria igual ao de um italiano. Para um italiano esse assunto é bastante sério, tal como o tema da Segunda Guerra Mundial o é para os alemães.
Para além disso eles pensaram imediatamente no acto, enquanto a piada rodava à volta do símbolo. Jamais eu acharia graça ao acto de violência psicológica em si. O humor negro usa muitas vezes o tema da violência mas não é nunca apologista da violência.
Mas quando pensamos: "Uma cabeça de cavalo? Mas porquê? Porquê um cavalo? Porque não uma cabeça, um coração ou uma orelha de porco vindo do talho? Ou uma pata de galinha? Porque não um peixe, que até cheira mal passado pouco tempo? Porquê um animal? Porque não uma planta, ou um fungo? Porque não uma carta? Ou um papel com "Bang! Bang!"? Se é para avisar da morte, porque não uma faca ou uma pistola para o suicídio? Porquê algo tão grande?
Porquê um cavalo? Porquê uma cabeça?". Certamente que há uma história por detrás do símbolo.
É com episódios como este que nos deparamos com um mundo imperfeito e constantemente a ser re-arranjado, reparado, demolido e reconstruído. É um mundo que é feito com símbolos.
Um mundo que tem os seus submundos os quais com a sua linguagem própria, toda ela simbólica.

(Decidi criar uma ilustração com uma linguagem NPL - um formulário para pedido das cabeças de cavalo, e porque não de plástico com a gravação personalizada - um produto que pode ser comercializado não só na Itália como também no resto do mundo, uma vez que essa “cabeça” é um símbolo que foi internacionalizado.)

I have a Mac computer. However I don't have an iPod. This craziness about this MP3 walkman is something I never understood. I know it's a pretty object! But you should start as a costumer to think about why are you choosing. This was an important question for my decision: Can you record live sounds with it?

Anti-iPod groups appeared in the last few years. Anti-Consumerists and Non-iPod fundamentalists together with angry old consumers compose this Anti-iPod Movement.
In 2005, Yegor Saks, from Toronto, launches the website "SmashMyiPod.com". He collects through it ($400 USD) in donations, money enough to purchase a new iPod destined to be smashed wile all this action was being recorded. This idea, which started to be just a revenge against a defective iPod, reveals to be and intelligent protest against consumerism when afterwards, using the same idea, he launched "SmashMyXbox.com", "SmashMyPs3.com". (and... "SmashMyRevolution.com"??).
In May of the last year SanDisc launched an aggressive marketing campaign against iPods, with the name "iDon't.com", that was also a website, saying: "The time has come to rise up against the iTatorship ... Now is the time to break free from restrictive formats and a single source for music.".
Well, I have to confess that i never liked and understood Sony with ATRAC3+, "which is more advanced than MP3". OK! But so what! You cannot use it in a Mac. Or in other MP3 players. People trade music... That's the reality! They want a free culture! If they don't have to pay for it... better!!

It is even worse than it seems.
The government is controlling everything. The courts and the media, and their important roles in the freedom of speech, are no exception.
They, the actual party in the government (PiS), in order to keep their place in power, had created several "reforms" bringing this way the power into their hands. Stronger than never, they are able to manipulate the Justice and the Information as the way they want.
Poland is a very catholic country. The Catholic Church in Poland keeps with the government a promiscuous political relation. From Vatican came already some worlds of discontentment. However flyers of PiS are given in churches and some priests tell to the people that they should vote according to their faith, in "the party that defends the Law and the Justice".
Poland is a country with a big problem of alcoholism. Polish main drug is alcohol. In the streets of Krakow they walk around the city looking for empty bottles to trade for full bottles. People that had a guaranteed job in socialism time, and a family who cared about them, and after lost everything. This people with no more hope unless to have some more drops of spirit and juice, are "helped" and taken to vote by the PiS Youth.
Seems very clear, one approach of this party, which was a central party, to the right wing and close to parties like SRP, of Andrzej Lepper, which combine nationalism with populism.
There is a lack of political education in Poland. And the people don't know which they can trust. There is a visible phobia of Socialism- understandable because of the History of Poland. A big Polish Self-Centrism was created as self-defense mechanism against Socialism. This mechanism is being used nowadays as a strong political weapon.
The Church which is considered a symbol of freedom, is now a Tool of Control, able themselves to control simultaneously, like had been during the dictatorships in Spain and Portugal.
This unbalanced situation in Poland is even affecting schools. The Polish Minister of Education had brought the Creationism to the School Program as an alternative to the Theory of Evolutionism.
If that can seem even comic, it's not when everyday in Polish televisions Polish Prime Minister, Jarosław Kaczyński, comes with threats, developing a "political program", that looks more a reality-show, based in scandals, accusations with no fundaments, speeding the fear, and terror over those who dare to confront them.
And they are even are arresting people. Their power over courts is enough to decide prisons based in those same accusations. And without any single prove people is arrested and exposed like criminals in the same televisions that never, or rarely, produce anything in contradiction, or against them (people in power).
